True Price of COVID and Riots

The economy is starting to come back, Malls are starting to open up again. One of the first malls to open was the Brea Mall, owned by Simon Malls. Stores were very slow to open up but as a week or two has passed, more places are opening up. I went on the very first day, and found that the mall had not only gone to great measures to be able to open up again, but so did the stores. The stores that were open could only let so many people in, with employee costs and had to use major sales to get people to even have the courage to leave their homes. The sales were aggressive, like Forever 21 had clothes for like $7-$15, and from my experience in the Fashion Industry- I know that is making those margins on those clothes very very small. Food places seem to the ones very leery to come back, from my last trip to the mall.

Meanwhile places like Target, which stayed open the entire time during COVID-19, recent riots made it so that it finally had to close, which was temporary, and even still was so sad to see a store trying to stay open for its own health and for the needs of it's clients not only deal with COVID but Riots. People, like the business, can't handle both. But then as part of the new normal, there is mixed messages about Face masks, not to mention the judging from everyone regarding your decision to mask or not mask.

What am I trying to say with this blog? I am talking about the price of COVID and Riots. I have spoken before about the price of COVID, but recent events have made it so that we are overloading our plate and making an impossible situation worse. I want to tell you a story from my husband's business that shows my point.

Last year he rented out a house in Arcadia to a Mother and Daughter combo that ran a Vintage Clothes and Furniture business, and used a 5 bedroom 4 bath house to live and warehouse in the same space. They moved everything from Las Vegas and were attempting to create California Roots. Business was booming, everything was organized and shows were lined up. It came tax time right, and funny enough the tenants usually pay taxes late but had the money and business lined up, and decided to do it early. Then COVID hit. Shows got cancelled, and their website was helping but not enough. So while they were trying to help the online get them through, the riots hit. After the riots, people stopped doing anything online. It was then we got the message from them that they were moving out, and refused to be those people that did not pay their rent. They cleaned the place and moved out promptly, and at move out left 2 fridges and 1 dryer. My husband offered to purchase them from her and she said I refuse your money. She went back to Las Vegas to keep her business alive by cutting her expenses.

She is just one example, but that was a tax paying good citizen of California. Not only does she run a business, she purchased stuff from estate sales for her business. Money changes hands and it is a ongoing cycle. The more good people we lose, the worse off we will be. I just urge you to be safe, stand up for what you believe, but don't forget the bigger picture.
