Photographers on Photography: Part 3

Two more weeks of Henry Carroll, let's get to part 3!

Photogrpahers on Photogrpahy: How the Masters See, Think, and Shoot: Part 3

Paul Graham: He enjoys photographing what most people think of as not worth remembering, like your neighbor picking up her mail in her driveway.

Viviane Sassen: She enjoys creating ambiguity by blacking out the face of her subjects naturally, keeping the viewer at a distance but not alienated.

Laia Abril: While some think signatures are important, she believes an artists signature obscures the image.

Gillian Wearing: Photographers are tied to reality and use that reality to blur the line between showing something as it is and being obscure.

Alec Soth: Appearances are deceiving and photography is a great tool to tell the story of those that normally remain untold.

John Baldessari: He feels that the camera can blind the user rather than help them see things as they are.

Lars Tunbjork: He enjoys taking photos of ordinary things in outlandish ways.

Richard Avedon: Trying to capture or reveal anything other than what's on the surface is a fools errand.

Wendy Red Star: She enjoys exploring the perceived notion of cultural history using photography, an art form historically dominated by white people.

Dana Lixenberg: Photogenic means much more than photo friendly but emitting light, captured by cameras.

Edward Weston: For him, he photographed reflected light and everything succumbed to the power of light.

Examples:
Paul Graham: Las Vegas
Viviane Sassen: Kathleen
Laia Abril: Untitled from Femme Love
Gillian Wearing: Self Portrait at 3 Years Old
Alec Soth: Lenny, Minneapolis, Minnesota
John Baldessari: Wrong
Lars Tunbjork: Untitled from Office
Richard Avedon: Marilyn Monroe
Wendy Red Star: Spring
Dana Lixenburg: J50, 2008
Edward Weston: Attic, Glendale

Obviously, you could probably guess that my favorite from this section would be the photo of Marilyn Monroe-but more than anything what she in that photograph is telling us-as she was so much deeper than she let anyone know her. Join me next week for the last section of this book!
