Social Media: The Power of Laughter

I have a client who is a contractor, and he is my guinea pig of sorts. If there is an idea I am thinking of trying, he is the first client to implement it and he sends any feedback my way that he gets. Last year I wanted to try something I would go to call: #FridayFunny. You know, you read a joke on Friday because you feel good because you have worked all week and your weekend is coming up?

He ended up giving me some of the best feedback a couple of months later, he told me someone had heard about him on the Facebook Buzz Group and had him and a couple of other contractors there to get mutiple bids. Now it is not likely they knew any of the contractors personally, and yet if you are online and someone follows you online-you can almost get the sense that you know them more than a stranger. At the end of the day, it was between him and someone else-and they wanted him more because of his #FridayFunnys.

Now as a marketer, nothing makes me happier than hearing a free well crafted social media post translated into a decent profit construction job. That's why you have marketing in a digital age right? But that got me thinking, everyone loves social media why would a joke be so powerful? Research Time!

Would you believe that some studies have found correlations between how often one uses Facebook and their overall Well Being? The more you use it, the worse off your physical and mental well being is. It has also been found that young adults that frequent social media have higher levels of Anxiety. All this information one would think we are lucky to have access to, may actually be too much and causing a very different effect on us as people.

So whats the alternative, give up Facebook? Some people have in experiments, and were significantly happier and positive compared to when they were on it. There was no comparing your life to a seemingly perfect life of someone you may or may not know in your feed, and it forced them to actually talk to people and hang out with them to see "what was going on". Some people end up going back because they miss the ability to see what the world is up to.

So what is the solution? I would ask that everyone finds their own version of "Moderation" and employ it. A little bit goes a long way. And fill in the rest of the time you would of otherwise been pluged to your screen in the company of good friends or outside. On the other side of the coin, I would say anyone posting anything, including myself, should be trying to make it a positive thing as social media can be a very useful tool in a Marketer's tool box. But not at the cost of negativity, no one needs that. For more information, read the source here.
