What is a Webinar and Should You Do It?

What is a Webinar?

It is basically an online meeting. Most people recently have seen the commercial for "Microsoft Teams" during the stay at home order. Virtual Meetings have been around, I myself fancy Zoom. I first started using Zoom when I worked for a marketing company that had no two employees in the same state, some even in Europe. In some ways, from the point of view of running a company, if you don't need an office to have meetings in it can save a lot of money. But in the current day, it is replacing almost all meetings. I even had a doctors appointment via Zoom the other day, crazy. Other times, you could prepare a presentation and invite people to join your zoom and talk to multiple people at once. Churches are even using it for Sunday Mass.

Should You Do It?

The answer is Yes and It Depends. Most industries have some use for it during COVID-19, and if your local church can do it, I bet you can too. First you have to figure out what use and need you have with it. Then pick a good spot in your house and test out your background, location, sound. Prepare your presentation. When hosting a Zoom, you can use a free or paid account. Free is great unless you plan on having hundreds of people in your presentation. Next decide if it is a private or public affair. Schedule and send out your link. Try to give everyone a couple of minutes to get in and deal with any technical difficulties.

A couple of tips:

If you don't have a good background, use the settings to change it. When you are on a meeting long enough you get bored and start to look at everyone's background. Get dressed (completely) and don't so much worry about makeup or hair. The most important thing is going to be a strong internet connection, so if anyone else is at home have them off the wifi for an hour (I am sure Call of Duty can wait). You can mute and turn off video, chat with everyone or just a specific person. There is the ability to record meetings but legally the host has to let you know this is being recorded.

Let me know how it goes! Good luck Zooming!
