SEO: Meta Data Description

This month we will be covering SEO, which is Search Engine Optimization. What does that mean? That means in the digital age of "Just Google It" when someone googles say, Marketing in Orange County...and you are a marketing company- you want your company to come up first (or on the first page) so that they will click on your listing, contact you, and do business with you. One of the four ways I will discuss in which we achieve that is by: Metadata Description.

Now I must preface this by saying, I meant to write this blog a year ago and did not. At the time I was thinking about writing this, Metadata descriptions were more of a thing. Now they are not as much, but some website providers still offer them, and if you are working with one of those providers-take the opportunity to use it. Google has been trending away from using Metadata descriptions to actually using content to provide that in the search engines. Either way-make one and use it. Until they are no longer a thing-run with it!

With that, I am sure you are wondering...what is a Metadata description? Many people have never heard of them. Once you see the visual below, you will realize you have seen countless versions of them:

Metadata description, depending on your website provider, is where you can fill in a description of your website that search engines will use so that when someone is searching for something relate-able to your description, it will know to have your listing pop up accordingly. Have you ever wondered why you searched for something, saw it in the description of that website you clicked, but then after clicking on it could not find that same info? That is because it is part of the Metadata description and may not be from actual content.

Now, that we know what it is, I am sure you are thinking to yourself...I gotta have one now! But how do I create it? Your metadata description needs to be written from a 3rd person point of view about your company and the services your company offers and can't be more than ~155 characters. This will take a couple of minutes to write something out and see if you like it, and once you like it, if you like it-check with Word that it matches the character count. I have a client whom I did the metadata description for below:

Example:
Mandi's Candies & Ice Cream Trucks is a Orange County based Ice Cream Truck serving Southern California for Parties, Fundraisers, and Ice Cream Socials with 70 different Ice Creams. ... Catering and Parties! Let Us Help Your School!

From this you can see the name of the company, where they serve, what they do, and even have an idea of where they want/get business from. That is essentially what you want in a metadata description. This particular client uses GoDaddy, which allows for use of such a description. My own sites use google sites-which does not.

So, in our SEO journey, we have a Metadata description...yay! But now the question is, what makes your website pop up in front of or behind the other sites? SEO can be compared to a giant web, this web is made up of Back Links. Join me next week as I explain what that is.
