Photography Masterclass: Part 5
Last week of Photography Masterclass: Creative Techniques of 100 Great Photographers by Paul Lowe. I have had a lot of fun going through this book thus far, and can really see by looking at the greats-how we ourselves can improve our game.
Documents
Photos can be a great documentary tool for documenting what can't be consumed properly in words or graphs. Photos from documentary photographers all around the world, in combination with the internet, helps brings us together as people on the planet and to understand the world we live in better.
Example
Jacob Riis - Lodgers in Bayard Street Tenement, five cents a spot
Lewis Hine - A moment's glimpse of the outer world
David Goldblatt - The commando of National Party stlwarts escorting Prime Minister
Danny Lyon - Elkhorn, Wisconsin
Bernd & Hilla Becher - Gas Tanks
Chris Killip - Youth on wall, Jarrow, Tyneside
Larry Sultan - My mother posting for me
Anna Fox - Workstations, Cafe, the city, Salesperson (9)
Richard Billingham - Ray's a Laugh
My take on this chapter is:
-
Histories
Some of our only, and best views, of history come from Photographs. Being "Stuck" in the present, with an ever unknown and changing future, it is easy to romanticize the past. But we would have no notion of the past without some of our more iconic photographs and ruins.
Examples
Roger Fenton - Valley of the Shadow of Death
Erich Salomon - British Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald and Albert Einstein
Henri Cartier-Bresson - Coronation of King George VI. London, May 12th
Robert Capa - Crowds running for shelter after an air-raid alarm sounded, Bilbao
Larry Burrows - James Farley gives way to grief
Phillip Jones Griffiths - Soldier with bulletproof shield, Northern Ireland
Gilles Peress - Tabriz, Iran (political demonstration)
Anthony Suau - Fall of the Berlin Wall
Susan Meiselas - Managua, Nicaragua
David Burnett - Allstair Brownlee winning the triathlon, London Olympics
My take on this is:
I hope you guys enjoyed this long month! We are getting near the second half of the year, which is when you would really want to take a really good photo, can you say Holidays? Next month join me as we talk SEO! It is a subject I am good at, always work at, but never talk about-so I am amending that next month!
