Photography Masterclass: Part 1
Hello, for the next month we will diving into Photography Masterclass - Creative Techniques of 100 Great Photographers by Thames & Hudson. We will cover two sections a week and I will end each section with my photo response to that section! Let's begin.
Places:
When one is taking a photo, sometimes it is thought that you need a complicated subject or location or both. And yet, there are many infamous photos that show only landscape or buildings. Location is one of the most important things about a photo, as it sets up the perspective in which you think about the scenario (or lack there of) and even the subject. Even when a photographer blurs the background and focuses on the subject, the background and the place is very important to consider and get right.
Examples:
Francis Frith - Traveller's Boat at Brim
Timothy O'Sullivan & Mark Klett - Green River Buttes/Castle Rock, Green Rivery, WY
Ansel Adams - Clearing Winter Storm, Yosemite Valley
Robert Adams - Colorado Springs, Colorado
Joel Sternfield - Glen Canyon Dam, Page, Arizona, August 1983
John Davies - Agecroft Power Station, Salford
Paul Graham - Untitled
Joel Meyerowitz - Bay/sky, dawn, fall
Richard Misrach - Outdoor Dining, Bonneville salt flats, Utah
Jem Southam - Yport
Simon Norfolk - The Lewis Glacier, Mt Kenya 1963 (A)

Spaces:
I would say it's easy to think space and place are similar but place is background more so in my mind-while Space is the message that the interior is telling us. It has often been said that you are a product of your environment, so for example if you grew up in Oregon, as an adult you have a lot of wooden sculptures on the walls. The space we see in photographs allows us a brief time capsule of history, and invites us to try and walk in that person's shoes-by mentally stepping into their space.
Examples:
Frederick H Evans - A sea of steps, Wells Cathedral
Eugene Atget - Magasin, Avenue des Gobelins
Berenice Abbott - Nightview, New York
Walker Evans - Alabama Farm Interior (Fields Family Cabin)
Hiroshi Sugimoto - Cabot Street Cinema
Andreas Gursky - Montparnasse, Paris
Robert Polidori - La Guarida, Restaurant Entrance, Havana, Cuba
Gregory Crewdson - Production Still (The Father)
Lisa Bernard -Training Set, Flat World

So far I am really enjoying reading this book. Last year, when I did my basic photography class book-it was the most fun, the most help, and one of by better blogs for the year. This year I wanted to up my game-and this book is great for not only upping the game but being easy to follow and enjoy different interpretation of the same photography basic idea.
