Photo Ownership and Rights To Use
We got some of our tools of the trade out of the way. Now we are set to take some great photographs! If not with our DSLR, with our Smart Phones. Where will we post them? Everywhere! Who will see them? Hopefully everybody! Some could call that a great power, available at our fingertips as soon as we post that update, and with great power comes great responsibility. Let's talk about owning your photos and using them legally.
Unless you take or pay for your photos, you do not own the rights to your photos. Some vendors don't even let you own your photos once you pay for them.
Example: How would that work? So lets say you pay vendor A $250 to photograph your home. The $250 deal only lets you use the photos to market your home. Even if you save the photos, or want to reuse them in another project or marketing campaign-you can't. You bought a one time use ticket. Want to own your photos? That will be $500. Then, even if you save them and want to share them you can.
What is worse than that? The belief that you can use google photos.
Example: I am doing a campaign for Cheetah's to raise money. I use a photo I got off of google and raise X amount of dollars, posting about this everywhere. Person Y owns the photo of the cheetah, posted it and Google had it come up when cheetah is searched. Person Y sees the Cheetah campaign, and wants to be paid a percentage of the profits or paid for each place and each time the photo was used. Can you really tell person Y how many times someone looked at, re-shared, posted, or used their photo? No. So you could owe them a lot of money.
The easiest way to know if you own a photo,is to get it in writing from the photographer/check your legal documentation when purchasing the photo...or take your own/use royalty free stock image photography. There are countless sites that will offer them.
Now that we have all of our warnings out of the way, let's discuss some awesome photo and video types that come complimentary on all of our smart phones!
