Why & How to use LinkedIn

LinkedIn for me has always been a resourceful tool but it's recent acquisition by Microsoft has made it a much more useful tool! People often refer to or think of LinkedIn as a Professional Facebook. Should you be using it? Are you using it already?

Why to use LinkedIn:
- Professional Facebook
It is the Profile/Messaging Social Media Platform of Professional and Job Hunters. Even if you are not active on it, having it be up to date keeps you in the running and always ready for those employment rainy days.

-Daily Rundown
I personally read the Daily Rundown every day. It comes to you as a notification if you have the mobile app and just keeps you up to date on what's going on in the world in a brief read.

-Keep up with Industries/Industry Rock Stars
At a former job, one of my responsibilities was keeping up Databases with contacts. Those databases are truly invaluable. People change jobs all the time though, and not always with a heads up of where they went and if they are more valuable as an individual, LinkedIn is a good way to keep track of them.

-Limitless Professional Growth Opportunities
Job recruiters are always looking. The best jobs get offered to you while you are at a job already. And sometimes we find as people that we start a job we think we like but it ends up not making us happy or there is no growth, why not always be ready for better?

-Reviews are better than References!
There are sections on the profile where your coworkers can give a review, but also more helpful, is they have to state what their relationship was to you. These are timeless compared to letters of reference or references for jobs (that can't be personal or end up being people who don't remember you).

While these are mostly personal profile reasons, there are a lot of work reasons too. Business profiles are great if you are the person recruiting!

How to use LinkedIn:
-Fill out your profile, keep it updated
It may take some time or a reminder to update it monthly but it is worth it to take the time to fill it out, keep the information current as well as your photograph. An all start profile does the work for you once you fill it out.

-Ask your current/former coworkers for reviews
There is more a value to reviews linked to your profile as we get more digital and soon enough employers won't even want letters of reference but reviews. Get a head of the curve and have good repertoire with your coworkers and review one another!

-Define what skills you need, Define/Grow/Add as needed
There is a whole section for skills, this a good way to see what you can do, how well can you do it, and do you need to add any? We should be always learning, always growing and when we can adding things to our profiles! It makes us as people more invaluable.

-Update your personal LinkedIn when you update your FB
When I look at my LinkedIn feed, it is just a compilation of peoples posts. If you have stuff to post on your business page, you can post it to LinkedIn too. It helps define who you are besides what you do.

-Use the URL of your profile on your resume, etc to see who is looking at you.
There is a section on LinkedIn where you can see how many people looked, what their industries were, and (depending on their privacy settings) who they were! This can prove to be invaluable if you are looking for a job or see if an applicant looked back at your profile!
